Difficult Conversations

Dear Parents,

One of the focuses of the TDSB in recent years has been on children’s mental health. Strong relationships with parents and other caring adults can help children weather many storms, but sometimes we are challenged too.

When having a difficult conversation, here are some things to keep in mind:

1.      Check in with yourself to make sure you’re calm and ready
2.      Keep it simple and work at their level.
3.      Follow up by asking questions
4.      Identify emotions (theirs and yours)
5.      End by framing the big idea for them and telling them you’re there for more questions.

Above all, children want to know they are safe and loved, no matter what else is going on.
